We have four kids. Our oldest is ten, and the rest are still little. Like most parents, we think carefully about what goes into our children's bodies and how they grow - from what they eat to how they sleep, from screen time to time outside. We try to live as close to nature as life realistically allows.

So when we started learning about how shoes affect foot development, we couldn't ignore it.

What the research actually says

The science is clear: childhood is the critical window for healthy foot development. Children's feet remain flexible and continue developing well into adolescence — which means the shoes they wear during these years matter far more than most parents realize.

Studies show that children who grow up with room to spread their toes naturally develop arches that are 23% higher compared to children in narrow, restrictive footwear. Around 75% of toddlers wearing ill-fitting shoes show toe deviation. Research published in Frontiers in Pediatrics found that children who walk barefoot or in minimalist shoes develop greater foot strength and better arch formation than those in conventional shoes — suggesting that natural foot movement in childhood may help prevent flat feet and skeletal problems later in life.

Professor Astrid Zech of the University of Jena, who has studied this extensively, found that children who grow up barefoot significantly outperform their peers in jumping ability and balance compared to children raised in conventional shoes.

What we found - and what was missing

Once we understood this, we started looking. What we found was frustrating. Shoes that were genuinely good for growing feet were either too expensive for most families, didn't actually support natural movement, or looked clinical and strange - the kind of thing a kid refuses to wear past the front door.
